Dark, ominious clouds gathered in the night sky, sprouting fingers of forked lightening that illuminated the gloomy atmosphere. Cacophonous claps of thunder echoed throughout the land, and with that the rain began to fall. It is here that I am created, shimmering on the footpath - I am a puddle.

My solid, tarmac base and clear, glimmering surface reflects the dimly-lit streetlights and flashing signs within my vicinity, me in all my glory. The menacing storm clouds are quickly broken, and the sun beams down upon the moist land. I can now reflect the facades of limestone from nearby buildings and, for a fleeting moment, passing cars.

Within a mere few minutes of my creation, the rhythmic thump, thump, thump of a morning jogger is brought to my attention. He runs closer and closer, footfalls sending the tiniest of vibrations through my solid tarmac base. One, two, three... splash! The jogger sloshes right through my middle, sending shafts of my glittering being everywhere. Already, I can feel my world dwindling.

The sun continues her magic, warm rays of light caressing the wet earth. I'm drying up, diminishing in invisible vapours. I know the end is near.

A little girl's euphoric giggles become clear over the noise of passing cars. Clad in her baulky rain coat and vibrant red gumboots, she waddles closer, detaching herself from her mother to leap right into me. Panic seizes me as my world shrinks further. More droplets of my being paints the footpath. I was once crystal clear and beautiful, now I am clouded with mud and debris.

Things could only get worse at this stage, for my next guest was a large, hairy beast. His pink, textured tongue lolled out of his sharp-toothed mouth, and with a glint of desire in his dark eyes, he approached. Heaving a sigh, the canine lowered his head and began to lap at my edges, and my world began to grow smaller and smaller; the beast was unknowingly drinking the remaining moments of my life. With a shake of his great black body, the dog pads away with his tail held high.

I am next to nothing - hardly worthy to be called a puddle. But before I can accept my fate and allow the sun to evaporate me without a care, a tiny sparrow flits down from a nearby tree and hops on its little feet until it's standing in what's left of me. With an elated chirp, the sparrow begins to bathe itself, sending more drops of my mucky being everywhere as it shudders and shivers.

But all is not lost. A crack of thunder alarms the sparrow, and without a second thought it darts away, leaving my surface murky and rippling. Yet this does not matter - there is hope after all! Rain begins to slash down amid the fingers of lightening that split the sky. I am replenished, glimmering once again on the tarmac footpath... for now.
A submission? From me?! What has the world come to?
This is a short story I wrote nearly three years ago, and decided to edit and update to share with you all. Sorry it's taken so long to submit anything, I've either been too busy or too lazy to get anything done. There will be more to come, I promise!
